Overview

The mission of the School Health Program is to appraise, protect and promote the health of students, minimizing health barriers to wellbeing, academic success and life-long achievement. Preventative services, education, emergency care, referral and management of acute and chronic health conditions, are provided to public school children in grades kindergarten through twelve Health screenings, education and other services are also available to private schools upon request. The School Health Program is also responsible for conducting child immunization record reviews at private schools. Services are provided in accordance with Florida Statutes and as outlined by the local School Health Services Plan. This plan is jointly developed by the Florida Department of Health in Seminole County, Seminole County School board, the Seminole County School Health Advisory Committee, utilizing the Coordinated School Health Program module

School nurses enhance health within the school and community providing the following services:

  • Conduct appraisals, nursing assessments, nutrition assessments, preventative dental screenings, and mandated health screenings and assessments
  • Promote healthy behavior and mental health through group health education in classrooms and oneto- one intervention with students exhibiting unhealthy behaviors and potential mental health problems.
  • Respond to disasters and assists community in recovery by serving as a disaster volunteer by teaching disaster preparedness.
  • Assure the quality and accessibility of health care services by referring students to qualified health care providers and by follow up of care received by students referred.
  •  Prevent epidemics and spread of disease by assuring that students are immunized and have a completed physical examination
  • Work with teachers on integrating health education into the regular curriculum
  • Collect data relevant to client health problems (e g., Annual School Health Report)
  • Conduct needs assessments, parent and teacher surveys
  • Develop, implement and evaluate needed health programs
  • Provide case management services
  • Develop and implement health policies and procedures
  • Pursue alternate or supplemental funding for nursing & health services
  • Participate in school health advisory committee
